Mentorship As Legacy | Volume 1, Edition 10
Jul 27, 2025
In this edition of Lead Anew: Insights and Growth, I’m shifting the focus from personal growth to something equally powerful: lifting others up. This reflection centers around the quiet, meaningful moments when someone seeks your guidance, and you realize that leadership isn’t just about ascending; it’s about reaching back and bringing someone along with you.
There’s a particular joy in witnessing someone you’ve mentored grow into their confidence. I vividly recall a moment when a member of my team, unfamiliar with leadership, faced her first high-pressure situation. Unsure of what to say and worried about making the wrong call, she sought my guidance. Instead of providing direct answers, I reminded her of her inherent instincts. Weeks later, I observed her lead a meeting with grace, advocate for her staff, and find her own rhythm. She didn’t need me to hold the microphone; she simply needed someone to believe in her ability to speak.
Mentoring isn’t about molding someone into your image; it’s about helping them discover their own voice. It’s about standing beside them, not in front of them. In this process, something shifts within you as well. You recall the uncertainty and hope you once felt, hoping someone would see potential in you. You remember how much a small encouragement can ignite a spark. By offering that light to someone else, you end up seeing yourself more clearly.
I didn’t always feel equipped to be a mentor. In fact, I spent years focused solely on personal growth, building my education, navigating career shifts, surviving layoffs, and even going back to school in my fifties. But somewhere along that winding path, I realized that leadership isn’t solely measured by achievements; it’s measured by impact. Often, the most lasting impact comes not from what we accomplish but from who we help along the way.
What’s remarkable is how mentorship creates a ripple effect. The nurse I supported is now mentoring others, and I see the ripple in her team’s confidence, as they ask questions, offer ideas, and trust their instincts. One conversation, one gesture of belief, can move through an entire organization without fanfare but with incredible force. That’s the legacy I want to leave.
Of course, I didn’t reach this point alone. I’ve also been mentored by leaders who recognized something in me when I was exhausted, discouraged, or doubting myself. One of them pulled me aside years ago after a challenging week and simply said, You lead with grace. Don’t let this moment diminish you. That sentence resonated with me more than any job title ever could. Those words became an integral part of the leadership I now offer to others.
Now, I often find myself asking myself, Who am I mentoring? Who is observing how I handle challenges, communicate, and care? And just as importantly, Who is still mentoring me? We don’t outgrow the need for guidance; we evolve into the kind of leaders who can offer it with greater empathy and humility. Mentorship is not a checkbox; it’s a lifelong cycle of learning, giving, and growth, all together.
Whether you’re offering guidance, seeking it, or simply showing up with honesty and care, remember that leadership is a legacy built one conversation at a time. Maintain your passion for mentoring and continue to lead anew with renewed vigor.
